Ear Aesthetics - Otoplasty

Ears are one of the important elements that complement the appearance of the face and affect the general appearance of the person. Ear deformities may start at birth; it may occur due to enlargement or tearing of the ear hole due to the use of earrings, or it may occur when the earlobe sags downwards in later ages.

In order to prevent psychological disorders especially in children, it is recommended to correct deformities with aesthetic surgery after 5-6 years of age when almost all of the ear tissue development is completed.

Ear aesthetics can be handled under 2 main headings. The first of these is the repair of prominent ear (sail ear). Ear tissue completes almost all of its development at the age of 4-5 years. For this reason, aesthetic operations on the ear can be performed from this age. Especially before starting school, it is important to correct the prominent ear deformity without disturbing the psychology of the child with the disturbing comments of school-age children's friends

Apart from this, there is no disadvantage in performing this operation at an older age. The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. As a result of the procedure performed by entering behind the ear, the scar remains hidden here. The angle of the ear with the head is corrected with stitches placed on the cartilages from the inside. In addition, the curve on the ear itself is also formed by shaping the cartilages.

During the healing process, the ears are left open after 3-4 days of dressing. The oedema resolves within a week - ten days and the patient returns to normal life within a few days after the operation.

Ear reduction operation is performed for people with large ears according to their facial proportions. This operation, which can be performed under local anaesthesia, is mostly applied to adults. As the earlobe grows with age, the ear may appear large; in this case, only the sagging in the earlobe is removed by intervention on the earlobe.

The most practical and least scarring method is the Double Helix Advancement Flaps method developed by Prof. Dr Erdem Tezel. In this method, most of the scars are hidden in the fold around the outer circumference of the ear. In this operation, stitches are removed after one week.

In addition, ear holes that are pierced from the wrong place, or excessively enlarged or torn due to earring use can also be repaired with a small intervention.
